Meditation – Counting

This week’s guided meditation uses a method that has long been a stalwart companion of mine, we count slowly from one to ten, and at ten you will find yourself relaxed, and in a state of meditation.

Please take a moment to make yourself comfortable.  It is not necessary to find a place of complete silence, just make yourself comfortable enough that you can relax your body and not fall to the floor; once again I emphasize that this should not be listened to while driving a car, operating machinery, or doing anything that requires your attention.

Let us begin with a rising awareness of your body, you are free to let your mind wander as you listen to the sound of my voice, there’s a part of your mind that will listen to me, that is the part that will count with me, and as we reach each additional number your conscious mind will relax, distractions will fade into the distance, what distractions remain, what thought floats through will only move you more towards that restful state of meditation.  Take a deep breath, feel your body expand, focus on the sensation of air moving into you, and then out again.

As you exhale your muscles relax, this will continue as we count, with every breath your body relaxing further until the desire to lift a hand, or flex a muscle is distant and past.

One, every word, every breath, every thought, every noise direct and indirect move you closer to that stage of meditation where your eyes will close.

Two, listening to every sound, you become acutely aware of your surroundings, this is the beginning, every sensation that you experience drives you further towards relaxation, it’s counter intuitive but let the noise, let your thoughts, let my words lead you further towards this state of relaxation.  Let your mind relax as it drifts from one thought to another, let your muscles relax as you breath out, your breaths slowing, your mind relaxing, as we approach the number ten you find yourself desiring this state of relaxation, your body responding to the desire to sleep with each word.

Three, eyes becoming heavy and hard to keep open, hands feeling the weight of gravity, every breath coming slow and steady, the desire to sleep increasing, the noises in the room distracting you less, the feelings and sensations all working together to drive you closer to a stage of sleep that you’re familiar with, thoughts roll past you like water over a rock in the river.

Four, slow and steady, every breath flowing easily, inhaling… exhaling, finding peace as your mind lets go, not fighting against thought, not stopping the endless daydreams or events of the day, mental distractions allowing your mind to concentrate as we continue counting, each thought coming slower, each breath more steady; slow and easy as your eyes become more heavy, your body more affected by the weight of gravity.

Five, there is a burning that comes into your eyes with every breath, a gentle sensation as if you haven’t blinked in a long time, and you want to, as you blink you find gravity affecting your eyelids, let them feel that weight, let each breath, each sound, each sensation reflect that sensation of gravity weighing on you, arms heavy, legs relaxed and difficult to move, eyes burning with the effort of keeping them open.

Six, a gentle burn in the eyes calls for sleep, listening to the thoughts that float past your mind, they are becoming dim, difficult to hold onto, and not important at this time.  Like rocks in a river your thoughts flow over you, difficult to hold onto, gravity pulls at you, weighing your eyes, they feel dry, the desire to keep them open is waning.  As you blink let your eyelids close with the weight, the gentle darkness like sitting in the shade on a summer day is refreshing; you don’t have to keep your eyes closed, but the fight to keep them open is difficult, and takes your mind off of the thoughts that flow past you.

Seven, breathe steady, breath slow, the gravity in the room is calling your muscles to relax; every beat of your heart sounds a gentle plea to let your mind go, let your eyes relax.  Every slow and steady breath leads you towards this goal of rest, relaxation, meditation; it’s within reach, as we near the final count, each number taking you closer.

Eight, slow, and steady, feel the rhythm of your heart, let your conscious mind go, let go.  Let your eyes rest.  There’s a light if you look towards your forehead, it glows, steady and comforting, focus all thought into the light, it draws it out of you, calls for it as you focus on the light.  Emotion is fed into this light, and it fades away, all that is left is calm, all noise and distraction feeds into this light, it glows, and is gone.

Nine, weightless, all gravity and thought feed into the light, there is only the light, it pulses with the beating of your heart, its rhythm matches your steady breathing, fatigue feeds into the light.

Ten, find yourself in a state of meditation, watching the light, clearing all thoughts, all sensations, all sounds into this warm light, feel your body, listen to your mind from this place of clarity.  As you focus things begin to take shape, the light glows warmly above a park bench, the bricks underneath it are clean and golden, the grass shines with the golden hue.

I stand before you, my hand stretched out to you, a guide as you look through your thoughts and find your peace through this meditation exercise.

Explore, breathe, find your peace, walk with me and show me where you go to get away from it all.

When you are ready, let yourself come up gently, feeling refreshed, confident, capable as we wake from this meditation.  One, coming up now; two, lighter still, and three, awake, and happy to see a new day.

Please take a moment and let me know the details of your meditation, where did you go?  What did you see?

Feel free to share this post with your friends.

Thank you

This meditation is near and dear to my heart, it’s the first one that I ever learned, and the one I have used the most.  It helps me find my center, and what could be easier than counting to ten?

I hope this helps for those who have a difficult time meditating.

Claudious

Thank you for offering this. I practice meditation as often as I can, which I’m afraid isn’t very often at all. Your meditation reminded me that it doesn’t require lots of time to make space for daily meditation.

Hi baby! I am home! Miss me?!?

I really like this one. I think this is the first time I’ve been able to really notice that I was more relaxed. I think it’s safe to say this is my favorite one so far.

Very glad to meet you Erika! I have to admit that I don’t have long periods of time to meditate outside of trying to get to sleep at night. It’s very true that it doesn’t require a lot of time, and being able to really calm down is worth the cost in time (for me)

Welcome back Claudia, I’m so glad you’re back, I missed you like the desert misses water.

I once tried to help a friend through a guided meditation like this, as we were going through everything I would have him discribe what he saw as he saw it, he wasn’t consciously aware of it, and it was very much like a disturbed Stephen King novel, I suspect that’s why such disclaimers exist… some minds have different ways to deal with things. It’s rare though.
