Meditation – Floating

This week the method focuses more on the destination than the journey to get there, it’s slow, and relaxing, the perfect escape for this time of year.

Breath deep, find a place where you can sit back and relax, make yourself comfortable, and begin a slow meditation.  The noises in the room do not matter; every sound will work towards taking you into a state of relaxation and peace.  The destination is a frame of mind where thoughts become reality, dreams can be real, and thought is easy and unhindered by stress or the outside world.  To take you to this state of mind I will count slowly to ten, by the number ten the details will be in focus, and meditation.

Take a deep breath, exhale slowly.  One; this number focuses on breathing, let your thoughts run free, let your body twitch, scratch an itch, let the noise in the room surround you, but whatever you do, please breath; take a big breath in, let it fill you, hold it, now let it out; slow and steady simply breath, you need not keep your mind centered on anything, just breath, slowly in, hold for a moment, and then exhale.

Two; keep breathing, follow the breathing routing, let it become second nature, full breath in, slight hold, then release, number two is for repetition, for making breathing work for you.

Three, your eyes get heavy, as you continue to breath there is a sensation that builds behind your eyelids, let them focus on the words in front of you, on the wall, on anything, but notice that as you continue to breath, continue to look around, that your eyes are burning with the sensation of heat, imagine the feeling that comes when you stand in front of the air from the blow dryer, how it dries out your eyes; three is for watery eyes that are tired of being held open.

Four, continue the lessons from one, and two, let three suffuse you, your eyes burning needing to blink, resist that urge to blink, try to keep them open, mock number four, the number that asks you to rest those eyes, keep them open in spite of the burning sensation, don’t blink, let them burn with your defiance.  Four is for keeping your eyes open.

Five, blink, as you do so you find relief to the burning of four, open your eyes again, it is difficult, open your eyes, as you do so notice that the eyelids are heavy, so hard to open, blink, let your thoughts continue to focus on your breathing, as you try to keep your eyes open, blinking often, with every thought, as they burn when they are open, let them rest with every blink. With each blink making it harder and harder to open your eyes.  Five is for blinking.  You can close your eyes at any time now if you feel so inclined.

Six, breathe; relax, let your shoulders relax, your arms, your neck, let the tension flow away from you with every breath, continue to blink, find relief as your eyes close, and find the opposite as they remain open.  Let your legs relax, your hands, your feet; consciously let each muscle in your body go.  Six is for muscle relaxation.

Seven, blink, the eyes burn, blink, behind your eyelids there’s a yellow glow, blink, looking upwards and above you the glow is brighter with every blink, keeping your eyes open burns, but as you close them this glow gets brighter, soothing on those tired eyes, let them rest, close your eyes now if you haven’t.  Seven is for the glowing light; let your eyes focus on its soothing light, let your mind relax as with eyes closed you look towards this light.

Eight, breathe, close your eyes, and relax; eight is for balance, maintain balance as your body relaxes further, letting your eyes cement closed as they view the light, the glowing light feels warm, a sensation that touches the skin as you lean back.  Feel the light of the sun against your body, as you take a slow breath in, and hold, then release, feel the glow of sunlight upon you, the air is fresh, it smells of life and all things living, trees, flowers, running water, the breeze that comes from a pond.

Nine, again relax, let your thoughts drift with you as you float, you’re laying down, the light that shines over your body is warm, comforting, brilliant, giving you energy and life, refreshing and liberating.  Nine is about the destination, you’re laying on your back with the glow of the sun on your body, eyes still closed, take a deep and soothing breath, feel a gentle rocking sensation, you are laying in a canoe, you can hear the many birds singing not far away, you feel the water gently rock the boat, so slightly as you breathe deep and relax.

Ten, in a state of meditation, laying peacefully on your back, legs of your loved one cradle your head, caring hands stroke your hair, tease your face, no word is spoken as you feel the sunlight on your skin, your body in the absolute state of comfort, as you lay there, trusting, being loved, finding solace and escape in the slow movement as the boat glides nowhere.

Breathe deep, if you open your eyes you will see the face you love, the nearby trees as they embrace the water, the beyond blue sky above, the glowing penetrating sun.  Take a thought, if you look at it now, you will see it with clarity.  If you look around you, details come into view, the color of the boat, the kind of trees blossoming around you, details beyond anything I can explain flooding to you.

If you like, reach into your mind for a stressor, for something that has you bothered and throw it out of the boat, hear the splash and smile, you are safe, you are at peace.  Let the boat float, feel the hands trace your eyes, touch your forehead, and help give you tranquility.

Stay here for a minute, take a breath, use this escape and let your body relax.  Imagine letting the serenity suffuse you, here you have no deadline, no pressure, nothing here is more important that you.

When you are ready, take a steady breath, and you will awake at the count of three, taking with you the energy of this place, the peace of mind, and the ability to focus clearly.  One, coming up now; Two, lighter still, and Three, you can open your eyes at any time, feeling relaxed and refreshed and being able to sleep comfortably when the time comes for that.

I love this meditation, there are few places where I can feel as free as laying in a canoe, having someone I love there who is paying attention to the slow movement and direction of the boat is my absolute fantasy, to feel the love from those touches and to not have to share words to know what we are feeling.

I hope this worked for you.  I hope you had a wonderful week and have a wonderful weekend.

Please take a moment to let me know what you think, what you felt, what you saw.  If this provided any benefit to you please share it with a friend.

I love the disclaimer. ‘anything that my kill you or others’ I also love the visualization of throwing stress of the side of the boat. Wonderful meditation, Thanks.

It took a moment to make my body want to be in the canoe…I wanted so bad to just float in the water. But slowly my mind built canoe walls and floor to laying on…taking away the immersed sensation, and replacing it with a drifting one. I could slowly feel the roll of the currents but found myself thinking how odd it felt to lay in a canoe…almost drifting back to not having one at all…then you mentioned the loved one…and my head raised with the growth of legs underneath it…my hair being played with (my favorite). I choose not to look at the one I love…I know who he is…and instead take pleasure in the moment at hand. Upon drifting ashore…I see a beautiful Willow tree..flowing with a spring breeze…soft velvet grass knee deep bowing from the wind…and lupine’s sprouting everywhere splashing the earth with color unimaginable…so many..that they blend and make more. Steps made of earth lead to a cottage with open french doors….

Omama, I’m glad you like that part about throwing the troubles over the side of the boat. One of the more powerful things about meditation is the imagery that can go along with thoughts, in a case like this throwing your problems overboard mentally really works for me in that they are left in this place, and they look new and manageable when next I see them.

    Thank you!

Claudia, I totally know the feeling, I couldn’t agree more.

Harmony, it is for this reason that I do these meditations, to take people into this place where comfort is easily obtained, where the world gathers details we normally overlook, where the rest of the story is limitless. I’m so glad for your journey there, thank you very much for sharing. The cottage with french doors sounds divine.

    Thank you!
