An Exercise in Imagination – Water

Instruction, Philosophy

On Mondays I like to take a moment to focus on the details of an object, it’s a relaxing exercise that should improve vocabulary and writing skills.  We take an object, focus on the details and then describe it either poetically or otherwise.

Water

Words that come to mind as I tilt the cup to the left and right are: clear, clean, pure, transparent, penetrating, permeating, soothing, flexible, refreshing, and variable.  The water stays level as its vessel moves; it is balanced despite my movements, comfortable no matter what position you put it in; and when stirred or shook up, it rights itself.  Water, cool and refreshing, warm and relaxing, one of the things I like most is that it has no form of its own; it can be what you ask it to be.  Clear and penetrating to the touch, it holds to my finger more closely than cloth, the drop falls back to the glass as my I raise my finger, but a cool remembrance is left behind, as though an attempt to ease a painful parting.  The impact of each drop spreads out and flawlessly combines from whence it came.

So many lessons can be learned from water.

This exercise is more difficult, there are so many things water can be, so many roles that we can put to it that a vague request like “Describe water” leaves me directionless in a lake where any shore is good enough.  I look forward to your descriptions of water, in the future I will break it down to something more specific, a warm bath, a hot soothing tea, but for now simply describe water, what words can be used to describe this substance?

I also found a fun link that lists words that are a deritivite of the Latin “aqua” for further research I found some interesting information there. (They have a name for someone who only drinks water.)

Water, the universal dissolver. I like it with dissolved chocolate and sugar as Hot chocolate. Dissolved Crystal lite, dissolved bubble bath, (of course I don’t drink this.)
It makes me relax in all these forms.
