Back to the Days of Christopher Robin and Pooh

Love, Me

I don’t often talk about details within my life, the goal is to keep what audience I have, and not bore anyone with details that don’t relate specifically to my little piece of cyberspace.  I want to include a little more of myself here than I have in the past, and it is to that I reference this post.

I have few memories of my younger days, one that has been dancing within my imagination for the longest time is that of the song by Kenny Loggins “Return to Pooh Corner” a story of growing up with Winnie the Pooh and then coming back to Pooh Corner later on.  At the time I first heard this song I enjoyed the melody, and the thoughts, but never understood the meaning.

I grew up with this little honey eating bear in a place I can’t describe with my adult eyes… a place of innocence and beauty, childlike joy.  As I grew I had to leave Pooh corner, it went something like this:

Narrator: “And so we come to the last chapter, in which Christopher Robin and Pooh come to the enchanted place, and we say goodbye.”

Pooh: “Goodbye? Oh no, please can’t we go back to page one and do it all over again?”

Narrator: “Sorry Pooh, but all stories have an ending you know.”

Pooh: “Oh, bother.”

Narrator: “Yes the time had come at last. Christopher Robin was going away to school. Nobody else in the forest knew exactly why or where he was going, all they knew was it had something to do with twice times and how to make things called ABC and where a place called Brazil is.”

I said: “Pooh, what do you like doing best in the world?”

Pooh: “What I like best is me going to visit you and you saying ‘How about a smackeral of honey?”

I said: “I like that too. But what I like best is just doing nothing.”

Pooh said: “How do you do just nothing?”

I said: “Well, it’s when the grown-ups ask ‘What are you going to do?’ and you’re saying nothing and then you go out and do it.”

Pooh: “I like that. Let’s do it all the time!”

I said: “You know something Pooh? I’m not going to do nothing any more.”

Pooh: “You mean never again?”

I said: “Well, not so much. Pooh, when I’m away just doing nothing will you come up here sometimes?”

Pooh: “You mean alone? Just me?”

I said: “Yes. And Pooh. Promise you won’t forget me… ever?”

Pooh: “Oh I won’t Christopher, I promise.”

I said: “Not even when I’m a hundred?”

Pooh: “How old shall I be then?”

I said: “99… silly old bear.”

Narrator: “Wherever they go and whatever happens to them on the way in that enchanted place on top of the forest a little bear will always be waiting.”

Now that I’m older, I’ve seen the words of the song, I understand and through my children I’ve seen Pooh corner again and then the other day I walked past my sons room and I heard his little voice: “Promise you won’t forget me Pooh?”

Pooh always makes me cry. Sometimes growing up isn’t fun.

How I remember Pooh and Wind in the Willows. Two great books that embedded themselves in our hearts forever. Pooh forget us? Never happen.

My niece had a PlaySchool bear whom she named simply Bear-Bear because he was a bear on one side and a different bear on the other. She’s in Pratt College now and still has Bear-Bear with her. I was the only one allowed to put Bear-Bear in my shirt pocket as she knew I loved him too and he would be safe with me while she played. He’s a little worn now, but in my mind he’s always in my pocket over my heart.

    Thanks for sharing. xxoo
